So I just got back from my very first wine tasting; we were being "educated" by Mel Hollick from Hollick Winery in Coonawarra, Australia. To start, I am not a big wine person; I like sweeter drinks (like icewine ), so dinner wines seem to be a bit too bitter and acidic for my taste. Anyway, we started off with a Reserve Chardonnay (of a year I don't remember); it was fairly expensive, so obviously it was one of my favourites. Funny how that works, eh? Then we moved on to the Sauvignon Blanc Semillon; not as good as the Chardonnay, but it didn't make me gag either (I really am NOT a wine drinker, I think it tastes like sawdust and vinegar... but that's just me). Then we moved on to the reds; Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Wilgha Shiraz, Neilson's Block Merlot, and a 2001 Ravenswood Cabernet Sauvignon. The last one was another favourite of mine (again, it is fairly expensive, go figure), but because the flavour was intriguing... you had to keep drinking to figure out whether you liked it or not; it was a kind of pain vs. pleasure sensation... I really want another glass! But yeah, I have a headache now and have decided that I do not like red wine, aside from the Ravenswood.
Anyway, Hollick is awesome... and Australian, so you can't go wrong!
